John Hazelhurst Kambs, age 75, of Twin Lakes, WI, died on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Aurora Medical Center Burlington. Son of the late Art Kambs and Betty Shumard Kambs, John was born on August 30, 1947, in Chicago, IL. He grew up in Deerfield, IL, and went to Huron College where he earned his degree in teaching. He taught middle school science for 10 years in Carpentersville, IL, where he was beloved by his students—some of whom still stayed in touch. John later worked in the railroad industry, from which he retired. On December 20, 1969, in Deerfield, John was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Catherine Kelly. He was a loving father to three children and devoted husband to his wife who preceded him in death on April 23, 2006. In his free time, he was an avid fisherman who loved the outdoors. John was the life of the party who enjoyed spending time with family and friends, telling jokes, and would talk with anybody. Those who knew him will remember and miss his many “dad jokes.” John also loved his Labradors over the years.
John is survived by his children, Kelly (Michael) Kambs, Malinda (Vikki McGraw) Kambs, and John (Jaime) Kambs; grandchildren, Lily, Lexi, Nathan, Nick, and Charlie; and siblings, Clancy, Tim, Maureen, Sue, Sheila, Tess, and Bridget; and son-in-law, John Jones.
