Cynthia “Cindy” Mead Sargent, 84, of Captiva, FL passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2022, in Twin Lakes, WI.
She was born June 2, 1938, in Chicago, IL the daughter of the late Walter Langworthy and Louise (Durham) Mead, Jr. She attended Chicago schools and went on to obtain an undergraduate degree from Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA. Following her undergraduate, she furthered her education at Northwestern University, receiving a master’s degree in music theory. She married Robert Edward Sargent on August 25, 1962, at Saints Faith Hope & Charity Church in Winnetka, IL. He preceded her in death February 9, 2010.
Cynthia’s passions were wide and varied. Her main focus was on the education of the arts and the health and wellbeing of fellow humans, concentrating on her beloved City of Chicago in her early years, then expanding her reach to Florida and Door County, WI. She was instrumental in numerous organizations including but not limited to, serving on the Board of Directors for Consolidated Papers Inc., longtime board member of Junior League of Chicago, Women’s Board of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, board member of League of The American Orchestras and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Board of Directors for Jane Adams Hull House. Strong supporter of the Merit School of Music, the Maritime Museum of Chicago and WTTW. Founding member of Music Now with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She was a lifelong sailor with her family and a valuable member of the Columbia and Chicago Yacht Clubs. Proud sponsor of the Peninsula Music Festival in Door County, Wi, PenArt of Door County and the Peninsula Art School. She also supported Captiva Civic Foundation, SCCF (Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation) and the Ding Darling Wildlife Nature Preserve, close to where she called home in her later years.
Survivors include her children, George (Amanda) Sargent of Winnetka, IL and Christina Sargent of Sanibel, FL; grandchildren, Margo Sargent, Charlotte Sargent, Dylan Sargent, Kelly (Lucas) Eads, Shannon Donohue, Riley Donohue, Maxwell Kanter, Nicholas Kanter, and Jacob Kanter.
In addition to her parents and husband, Cynthia was preceded in death by her siblings, Walter Langworthy Mead III and Sally Mead Hands.
Services for Cynthia Mead Sargent will be held privately. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to FISH of Sanibel or CROW Wildlife Rehabilitation, in her memory.
