Attend the Spring Philharmonic Concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5, in the A. F. Siebert Chapel.

The Carthage Philharmonic is a versatile ensemble that showcases both the standard orchestral repertoire and hidden masterworks from underrepresented composers. From Franz Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven to Caroline Shaw and George Walker, the Philharmonic is dedicated to exposing both its performers and the community to the excitement and variety of orchestral music. The Philharmonic is a dynamic ensemble which prides itself on its commitment to growth, excellence, and camaraderie between ensemble members to create a more connected sound.

Professor E. Edward Kawakami serves as the director of the Philharmonic, and in 2017-18, he was the recipient of the Carthage College Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award. In addition to his role as conductor, Prof. Kawakami is the director of orchestral activities at Carthagr, as well as an active clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator. Before coming to Carthage, Prof. Kawakami served as conductor of the California State University, Northridge Symphony, and Chamber Orchestras, as well as being employed as a conductor of various musicals, film soundtracks, and varied guest conducting positions around Southern California. Prof. Kawakami has collaborated with award winning musicians such as Pulitzer prize winner Ellen Twillich and Grammy award-winning violinist Mark O’Connor.
