Mary L. Matta, 75, formerly of Kenosha, late of Buckeye, AZ, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 28, 2025, at Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ.
She was born on March 20, 1950, to the late James Lawson and Lottie M. McRae in Warren, Arkansas, where she attended McRae High School. Later in life, Mary moved to Kenosha and pursued her education and a career in nursing.
On September 22, 1984, she married Alfredo R. Matta, to which they shared “King Boy,” their German Shepherd. They added to their union their only son, Al Ramon Matta, born in July of 1988.
Mary continued to work strongly after years of nursing at Abbott Laboratories, retiring in 2016.
Mary was affiliated with the daughters of Masonic Shriners.
Mary loved bowling, cooking, sewing, fishing, gardening, and going to the casinos. The biggest joy in her life was her son and five grandchildren.
Mary moved to Buckeye, AZ, in 2019 and truly loved living there.
Mary is survived by her son Al Ramon Matta, her two stepdaughters Migdalia and Mildred, her stepson Nephtali, her grandchildren Jordan, Ava, Rylin, Harlem, and Londyn, her siblings Catherine McCoy, Otis Lawson Jr., Ruthie Harrington, James Taylor, Ronnie Gaston, Addie Strong, and Climmie Gaston Sr. She is also survived by her special friend Raymond West, her special grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alfredo R. Matta, her sisters Willie B. Moore, Charlene Pickett, Mitt Lou Hampton, Betty Mae Hampton, her brothers J.T. Lawson, Billy Ray Lawson, and Vance Martin.
Funeral Services for Mary will be held on Friday, January 16th at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) at the Bruch Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Green Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
