Loran Hein, a dedicated educator, coach and friend, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the age of 89.
Born on March 29, 1936, in Elkhorn, WI, Loran was one of five children born to Clarence and Evelyn Hein. He grew up in a lively household and developed a lifelong passion for learning and connecting with others.
Loran began his teaching career at St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, where he taught mathematics and discovered his passion for fencing. He later joined the faculty at UW-Parkside, sharing his knowledge of mathematics with generations of students.
Beyond the classroom, Loran made his mark on collegiate athletics. In 1966, he founded the fencing program at UW-Parkside and served as head coach until 1984. For 17 remarkable years, he led the team to compete successfully against some of the top fencing schools in the country. His expertise was recognized nationally when, in 1975, he coached the USA Team at the Under-20 World Championships. In recognition of his achievements, Loran was inducted into the UW-Parkside Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.
Loran’s curiosity extended to his personal passions. He enjoyed traveling around Wisconsin, often stopping at local libraries to research and expand his family tree. Another of his great joys was riding Amtrak trains across the country. These journeys weren’t just about the destination, they were about reconnecting with friends and collecting stories he loved to share with his family.
Throughout his life, Loran forged lifelong friendships — a testament to his warmth and engaging spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Evelyn Hein, and his siblings: Nancy Hein, Don (Darlene) Hein, Jimmy (Donna) Hein, and Polly Schwartzmiller. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Carl Schwartzmiller and many other beloved relatives and friends.
Loran leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, generosity and deep love for family and friends. His stories, his passion for learning and the many lives he touched will be fondly remembered.
A gathering to honor Loran’s life will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the service at 12:00 p.m. at the Piasecki Funeral Home, 3720 39th Ave, Kenosha, WI.
