James “Jim” Anthony Tirabassi, age 87, known affectionately as “Mr. Hole-in-One” on many local golf courses, passed away peacefully at his home on July 26, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on May 24, 1938, Jim was the youngest of four children of the late Domenick and Amelia (Russo) Tirabassi. A gifted athlete, Jim made his mark at Kenosha St. Mary’s High School, where he notably scored 51 points in a single basketball game—an achievement still remembered decades later. He played on championship-level Tirabassi family softball teams, excelled in city league basketball, was a proud member of the Kenosha Chiefs Semi-Pro Baseball team, and was inducted into the Kenosha Softball Hall of Fame.
On September 6, 1958, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Mary (Davis) Tirabassi. Together, they built a life centered around family, community, and sport. Jim enjoyed coaching his children’s grade school teams at St. Mary’s, always encouraging sportsmanship and fun.
He served honorably in the U.S. military from 1956 to 1963, beginning with the 126th Field Artillery/National Guard and later the 291st Engineer Battalion, U.S. Army Reserves/18th Army Corps, where he earned the rank of Corporal Specialist 4th Class.
Jim carried on the family tradition by working with his beloved brother Dom in their father’s business, D. Tirabassi & Sons Excavating. Together, they upheld the values passed down to them—hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to the community.
Jim was a passionate golfer who played in numerous amateur and pro-am tournaments. Among his proudest golf achievements were two hole-in-ones, both made on August 26, 1996, during the Wisconsin State Senior Amateur Tour. He cherished time on the course, not just for the game, but for the camaraderie and laughter shared with friends.
Known for his endless stories and quick wit, Jim brought joy and laughter wherever he went. He had a gift for making people feel welcome and entertained—and he never missed a chance to tell a good joke.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 67 years, Mary; his children Jim (Kathy) Tirabassi, Sue (Travis Nietupski) Tirabassi, and Todd Tirabassi; grandchildren Michelle (Jim) Sheely, Amber (Will) Koerner, Andrea (Shane) Quella, Mario (Katherine) Tirabassi, and Anthony Tirabassi; and great-grandchildren Ryan and Brandon Sheely, Cecilia Tirabassi, Lucca and Gio Quella. He is also survived by his brother Domenick (Gina) Tirabassi Jr., along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Adeline (Ray) Grudzinski and Divina (Elmer) Herzog; in-laws Ernie Skau Sr., Judge W.W. (Louise) Davis, and Jim Davis; nephews Ernie Skau Jr., Rick Skau, Bob Herzog, Jim Herzog; and nieces Caroline Skau Neubecker, Therese Skau and Diane Herzog.
Visitation and service times are pending. Please look back on Monday afternoon.
