At the Gateway Technical College Foundation, we help to meet the needs of students in many different ways.
Because of generous donors, we provide scholarships for students taking academic courses to help pay for tuition and books. The thoughtfulness of community members also helps our students who are desperate and need those student emergency grants, which provide resources to address the many different needs that would otherwise keep them from continuing to pursue their education.
Getting a GED
One area coming as a surprise to many, but is just as important as our other efforts, is our work to pay for GED testing costs for students seeking to better themselves through a high school equivalent certificate.
For many, earning their GED is just as important to their lives – and the lives of their families – as earning a two- or four-year degree.
It’s well documented that earning a GED or other high school credential provides so many more job opportunities for those students. A lack of having that basic credential remains a huge barrier to many, keeping them from better pay and better benefits now and into their future.
Earning a GED has an impact on more than just potential jobs and earnings – it affects the ability to earn a certificate, diploma or degree. There are some academic programs which you need at least a GED or high school equivalent to be able to enroll in, and there are several apprenticeship programs, as well, in which you need to have a high school equivalent certificate to qualify for enrollment.
Gateway Technical College Foundation Helps Make a GED Exam Affordable
At Gateway, we understand the importance of a GED. That’s why the Foundation helps students to be able to pay for the fees to take the exams.
One recent Kenosha GED graduate shared that the grant lifted a huge burden off their shoulders. It helped them feel like a normal person, they said, like they could stand alongside everyone else because they had the support to give them the courage to keep going and believe in themselves again.
I also realize the long-term impact of having a population that has earned at least a high school equivalent – the economy. Studies show that an educated population has a huge impact on the economy, the ability for businesses to thrive, and for people to realize their long-term monetary goals.
Helping with that GED on our level has a ripple effect out to the communities.
This is an impact that is undeniable and one our donors are proud to fuel.
