Kenosha’s own Ben Woods, a proud Mahone Scholar and graduate of Kenosha Unified Schools, is taking center stage this fall in Music Theater Works’ vibrant new production of Godspell. The celebrated Stephen Schwartz musical, reimagined for a contemporary setting, runs October 23 through November 16 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie.

In his Chicagoland debut, the spotlight shines on Ben Woods, a versatile actor and vocalist. He joins a vibrant ensemble that collectively reinvigorates this timeless musical fable for a new generation. Known for its message of community, compassion, and joy, Godspell has touched audiences for over 50 years with its infectious rock score and uplifting storytelling.

For over 50 years, Godspell‘s message of community, compassion, and unbridled joy, propelled by its infectious rock score and heartening narrative, has resonated with audiences. This bold new iteration situates a disparate group within the familiar confines of a local coffee shop, where they unearth purpose and solace. The production setting is inspired by the real-life work of Curt’s Café, a nonprofit organization supporting at-risk youth.

Under the direction of Matthew Silar, choreography by Amanda Hope, and Justin Kono conducting the music, this Godspell promises a vibrant and strikingly relevant interpretation of the cherished musical. Audiences can anticipate timeless anthems such as “Day by Day,” “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” and “All Good Gifts,” presented in a rejuvenated context that resonates deeply with today’s world.

From Kenosha to Center Stage

Named a Mahone Scholar, Ben Woods earned early recognition for his leadership, scholarly pursuits, and unwavering commitment to civic duty. That same spirit courses through his performance, where he infuses heart, humor, and formidable vocals to animate Godspell‘s profound message. “Growing up in Kenosha taught me the true meaning of community,” Woods reflects. “I’m reminded of the saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’—and Kenosha has always been my village. From the countless mentors who helped shape me, to my mother —my greatest role model— my purpose has always been rooted in giving back and building that same community.”

Woods’ progression from Kenosha schools to the stage serves as a testament to his steadfast commitment and the enduring support he has received. “In 2019, the CEO Scholarship from the Mary Lou & Arthur F. Mahone Foundation afforded me the opportunity to pursue my BFA in Theatre with a specialization in Directing at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas,” Woods elucidates.

“Shortly after graduating, I returned home to Kenosha and began my journey as a Theatre Director for KUSD at my alma mater, Bradford High School. During that time, I worked closely with my former Theatre Director, Holly Stanfield, and together we had the privilege of taking shows to compete—and win—at the Junior Theatre Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, and the International Thespian Festival in Bloomington, Indiana.”

Ben continues, “Becoming an educator wasn’t something I initially planned, but once I stepped into that world, I was hooked. That passion led me to pursue my Master’s in Music Theatre Vocal Pedagogy at Carthage College, where I graduated last June before beginning my work as a Visiting Professor of Musical Theatre.”

Asked about how he is continuing to support the Kenosha community, Ben responds, “As I continue educating and equipping the next generation of artists, I am constantly reminded of how rewarding it is to witness growth—not just in artistry, but in humanity. To play even a small part in someone’s journey is one of life’s greatest privileges, and in doing so, I feel as if I’m giving back to the very village that raised me.”

“While at Carthage, I crossed paths with Linda Madonia, one of my vocal coaches there, who connected me with this production of Godspell. It all feels like a full-circle moment—because at its heart, Godspell is about community. Each individual brings their own story and spirit, and when we come together, we create something greater than ourselves. In many ways, that’s exactly what Kenosha has done for me.”
