January 15, 1955 – February 23, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gale Elaine Hughes, who departed this life on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the age of 71. Gale was born on January 15, 1955, to John and Beverly (Zick) Engelmeyer in Oshkosh, WI. She was a 1973 graduate of Oshkosh West High School. Throughout her years, she was known for her kindness, warmth, and unwavering spirit.
On October 9, 1993, she was united in marriage to Michael Hughes, her loving husband, whom she’s already greatly missed.
Gale built a distinguished career in the medical field, dedicating herself to the science of healing and the care of others. She began her professional journey as a Phlebotomist at St. Therese Hospital in Waukegan, where she developed the precise, compassionate touch that would define her work. She continued to grow in her craft at Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest, IL, where she served as both a Phlebotomist and Lab Manager, taking on greater responsibility with characteristic grace. Her expertise and leadership ultimately led her to Baxter Healthcare in Round Lake, IL, where she served as a Hematology Research Manager, contributing to important work in the study of blood and human health. Throughout her career, Gale exemplified professionalism and quiet dedication, making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and colleagues alike.
Gale loved animals, especially her beloved dogs, and took great pride in caring for them. Her yard was one of her favorite places to be – gardening, landscaping, and creating a beautiful space to share with others. She delighted in decorating for the holidays, always bringing warmth and festive spirits to her home. Time with family meant everything to her, especially vacations and short trips with Mike to state and national parks, including a memorable trip to Alaska. She enjoyed hiking, and she cherished motorcycle rides with Mike on his Ultra Classic Harley-Davidson, embracing the open road and the time they shared together.
Gale is survived by her beloved husband, Michael Hughes; sister, Kay Molinski; brother, Todd (Marge) Engelmeyer; brothers-in-law, Joe (Patrice) Hughes and Tim (Sandy) Hughes; father and mother-in-law, Mike and Frances (Hines) Hughes; and many loving nieces and nephews. Gale’s strength and compassion touched the lives of all who knew her, leaving a lasting impact on her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Gale was preceded in death by her nephew, Timothy John Molinski.
In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances to the Wisconsin Humane Society (https://www.wihumane.org/) or the Kenosha Salvation Army https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/wi/kenosha would be appreciated.
The family invites those who knew and loved Gale to join them as they commemorate her life, reflect on her many contributions to the lives of others, and share stories that celebrate her enduring legacy. Together, they will find comfort in their shared love and memories of Gale, whose spirit will continue to shine brightly in their hearts.
Gale will be deeply missed, but her light will forever remain in the hearts of everyone she touched.
