John F. “Jack” Degen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and cornerstone of the Burlington community, passed away on April 15, 2026, at the age of 95. He lived a life defined by hard work, deep devotion to his family, and a genuine love for the people and places around him.
Born on October 6, 1930, in Burlington, Wisconsin, Jack was the son of John J. and Norma H. (nee Ganz) Degen. He was raised in the faith and community that would shape him throughout his life, attending St. Charles Grade School and St. Mary High School before going on to earn his degree at Marquette University in Milwaukee. A lifelong member of St. Charles Catholic Church, his faith was a quiet and steady presence through every chapter of his life.
Jack proudly served in the United States Army. Following in his father’s footsteps, he built a respected career as a land surveyor and engineer at Degen Engineering. The name on the business wasn’t just a sign — it reflected the pride and integrity he brought to everything he did.
On January 25, 1969, Jack married the love of his life, Rita Johann Vos. Together in Burlington, they built a warm and lively home, raising five children and creating a family that was his greatest source of joy and pride.
Beyond his professional career, Jack was a man who embraced life. He could often be found on the golf course, chasing that perfect round with the same focus he brought to his work. His traveler’s spirit and curiosity about the world never faded with age. Above all, he was an extraordinary grandfather — the kind whose presence made every gathering feel complete. In addition, he was known to be a dedicated member of the Burlington community who gave generously of his time and himself.
Jack is survived by his wife, Rita; his children, Bobbie (Ed) Kellerman, Marlee Magdic, and John (Shandrea) Degen; son-in-law Ron Manthei; grandchildren Stacey Peerenboom, Dan Ingiald, Melanie VandenBoogard, Gordon Manthei, Max Manthei, Nikki Kellerman, Chelsea Eckstein, Amanda Cravens, Sarah Reilly, Becka Reilly, Jason Magdic, Sydney Degen, and Mykayla Degen; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and his niece, Laura (Seri) Dunne. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Debra Manthei; his son, Dan Johann; son-in-law Tony Magdic; his sister, Norma Seri; and brother-in-law Jim Seri.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the St. Croix Hospice team, especially Jen Watkins, for the compassionate care and support provided during this time.
John F. “Jack” Degen leaves behind a family that is a living testament to the man he was, and a community that is richer for having known him. He will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.
