It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cora Mae Conley, cherished sister, devoted friend, and respected member of the community, who peacefully departed this life on Monday, April 6, 2026, at the age of 94. She was born on May 7, 1931, in Chester County, Tennessee, to the late Freeling and Blanche (Armstrong) Hughes. Cora spent much of her life enriching the lives of those around her in Chicago, Illinois, where she made her mark as an Engineering Assistant in the healthcare field with Abbott Labs.
In 1967, she was united in marriage to Rayfield Conley. He preceded her in death in 1996.
Cora was more than just a brilliant professional; she was a kind-hearted soul with an adventurous spirit. Her love for traveling and cruising took her to breathtaking places, which she eagerly shared with friends and family. In addition to her travels, Cora was deeply involved in her community. She proudly worked for Aging & Disability and served as Treasurer for the NAACP, contributed her time to the Democratic Party Committee, and actively supported various organizations, including the Lincoln Center and the Mary Lou Mahone Foundation. Cora was also a familiar face at the Senior Center and served as a dedicated poll worker, ensuring that every voice was heard.
She was a prolific reader with a thoughtful, observant nature and a gently guarded sense of humor that revealed itself in the most delightful ways. Known for her encouraging spirit and genuine kindness, she made those around her feel seen and valued. Each Christmas, she carried on the simple but meaningful tradition of bringing presents to church, a reflection of her generous heart. Though she had no biological children, she lovingly embraced and nurtured many through her church community, where she was a devoted and ever-punctual Sunday school teacher for women.
An embodiment of a virtuous woman, she was calm, classy, and resilient—both strong and deeply faithful. She lived with intention and care, investing wholeheartedly in the lives of others. Her life, though beautifully complex, was marked by unwavering faith and a quiet impact that touched countless lives.
She leaves behind a loving family, including her beloved sisters, Mary Hearns and Gena Hughes; stepson, John Ray Conley; and stepdaughter, Leona Stokes. Together, they created a bond that withstood the test of time and shaped Cora into the compassionate person we all adored.
In addition to her parents, Cora was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rayfield, as well as her dear sisters, Rosie Westbrook, Ada Pauline Atkins, her brothers, Billy Hughes, Amos Hughes, James Hughes, Weldon Hughes, Bennie Hughes, and Charlie Cole Hughes.
Cora Mae Conley may have left this world, but her spirit, love, and the countless memories we hold will forever linger in our hearts. We invite all those whose lives she touched to join us in celebrating her remarkable journey and the joy she gifted us all.
