Jane C. Smart, 91, of Union Grove, passed away Monday, April 6, 2026, at Zilber Family Hospice.
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on December 3, 1934, she was the daughter of James and Ellen (nee Haugh) Doyle. Her early life was spent in Milwaukee and Waterford, where she graduated from Waterford High School. She earned an associate’s degree as a medical assistant. On September 17, 1955, at Paris Corners Catholic Church, she was united in marriage to Harold Smart. Following marriage, they moved to Union Grove, where they raised their four daughters. Harold preceded her in death on December 1, 2017.
Jane was a homemaker, also working at Southern Wisconsin Center, followed by the meat department at Piggly Wiggly, and Plastic Parts. She was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, St. Robert’s Mission Club, Union Grove Lioness, Girl Scout leader, and Union Grove Harvest Club. She was an avid reader and belonged to several card clubs. She also loved spending time with her family, especially on their yearly vacations in St. Germain and her getaways with her daughters.
Jane is survived by her children, Sandra (Doug) Nelson, Linda (Gene) Bower and Andrea Lamping; grandchildren, Christopher (Megan) Bower, Scott (Kim Ryan) Nelson, Kevin (Dana) Bower, Peter (Christina) Nelson, Adam (Paige) Bower and Alex Weiss; seventeen great-grandchildren; sister, Audrey Gavin; and sister-in-law, Carol Smart. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Laura, and son-in-law Frank.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Aurora Hospice for their care during this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Robert’s Church or Aurora Zilber Family Hospice.
Mass of Christian Burial for Jane will take place at 12 PM on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Union Grove. Visitation for family and friends will take place at the church on Saturday, April 11th, from 10 AM until 11:45 AM. Burial will follow in Union Grove Cemetery.
