Dr. Abdul Basit Chaudhari, MD, FRCS, a longtime Cape Girardeau neurologist, died Nov. 30, 2025, at the age of 88 in Pleasant Prairie, WI.
Dr. Chaudhari practiced medicine for more than 60 years, touching thousands of lives through his clinical excellence, deep compassion, and dedication to patient care. He joined the Cape Girardeau medical community in 1987 as a neurologist and later became part of Southeast HEALTH’s physician practices from 2004 to 2020, where he was respected by patients and colleagues alike. Despite his passion for neurosurgery, Dr. Chaudhari made a deliberate career change for the benefit of his family, relocating to the United States and continuing his medical practice as a neurologist.
Born Jan. 11, 1937, Dr. Chaudhari received his medical education in Pakistan and advanced training in the United Kingdom and New York, served as a consultant neurosurgeon in Wales, and as Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. He authored more than 200 publications, developed an innovative treatment for hydrocephalus, served as editor of the Cape Girardeau County Medical Society Journal, and received the 2010 Heartland’s Best Doctor Award from KFVS12.
Patients consistently described Dr. Chaudhari as an expert diagnostician who was caring, humble, and known for his unwavering commitment to placing patients and their families first. Outside of medicine, he enjoyed playing squash and cricket.
Dr. Chaudhari lived his faith through a life marked by service, humility, and generosity. He gave selflessly and steadfastly in support of his religious community.
He is survived by his wife, Anwar Sultana Chaudhari; his children, Amir, Summer, Sarah, and Sonya; and 8 grandchildren.
Funeral and burial services were held Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Bruch Funeral Home and Sunset Ridge Memorial Park in Kenosha, WI.
