Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital’s very own Matthew Martini, M.D., Interventional Cardiologist, has been recognized as the leading implanter of Impella® Heart Pumps over the last year in Wisconsin and the Michigan Upper Peninsula. Thanks to Dr. Martini’s exceptional skills, Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital leads the region as one of the highest volume hospitals in Wisconsin for performing Impella® implants and complex cardiac stenting procedures, an honor to be tremendously proud and excited about.
World’s Smallest Heart Pump
“Impella® is the world’s smallest heart pump,” said Dr. Martini. “An Impella® device is only used for the sickest of the sick patients that are at high risk of death upon entering the hospital. This device is a non-surgically implanted heart pump that allows the heart to rest and recover after a major cardiac event. It helps stabilize blood pressure in patients experiencing shock and supports the heart during complex stenting procedures. By temporarily assisting the heart’s pumping function to efficiently deliver blood and oxygen throughout the body, an Impella® helps keep our sickest patients safe during cardiac interventions. It is a temporary device used only when there is a dire need. It is implanted through a sheath in the femoral artery and removed once the patient is stable. This technology improves patient outcomes.”
Marker of Excellence and Growth
“Over recent years,” said Dr. Martini, “the progress in high-risk cardiac care that Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital has accomplished is phenomenal and is a direct result of the administration’s commitment to growth and excellence. The administration has made dedicated efforts to attract world-class physicians across all disciplines and to invest in leading-edge technology. This is not just a recognition of advancements in my procedural skills; it also marks the exponential growth of this outstanding hospital.”
Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital is the only hospital in Kenosha County that provides around-the-clock treatment for heart attack patients and the only one with a Straight-to-Cath Lab program. This highly organized, collaborative system meets the needs of patients having heart attacks 24 hours a day in Kenosha, Walworth, and much of Racine Counties in Wisconsin, as well as parts of Lake County in Illinois.

Dr. Martini said, “My colleagues and I are diligently expanding the cardiac care program at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital. Every minute matters with cardiac complications, and we are now equipped to handle high-risk cardiac emergencies right here, with only rare exceptions requiring referral to other facilities. Patient outcomes are entirely dependent on the time it takes to get the blocked artery opened, and the growth of our program is saving limbs and saving lives. This is a tremendous advancement in medical care for our community, and I am proud and grateful to be part of this.”
