The Kenosha County Division of Planning and Development is advising residents to be aware of an email scam in which false invoices are being emailed to property owners, attempting to bill them for land-use and zoning fees.

These invoices — which include the Kenosha County logo and address but are not sent from a legitimate county email address — request that the recipient wire money to the county. They have targeted individuals with applications pending before the County Board’s Planning and Development and Extension Education Committee.

The county would not ask for fees to be wired, said Andy Buehler, Planning and Development Director. Legitimate fees are payable in person or by mail to the Planning and Development office or through the county’s online permitting website.

“If you receive an invoice that is unexpected or does not appear legitimate, please contact our office to verify before you submit any sort of payment,” Buehler said. “This is a scam that has been going around in other counties and states, and now, unfortunately, it is here.”
