Dr. Jonathan Ben-Zev, Orthopedic Surgeon- Hip and Knee Specialist, performs a leading-edge, outpatient hip replacement option that speeds patient recovery. This anterior approach to hip replacement procedure proved to be the right option for Kenosha resident, Vickie Lewis.
“I have experienced both types of hip replacement,” said Vickie. “I had a posterior approach hip replacement procedure performed by a different surgeon. Then, I chose Dr. Ben-Zev to perform an anterior approach hip replacement on my other hip. My recovery and overall experience varied drastically from hip to hip. With the anterior approach, I experienced less pain, fewer limitations, a faster recovery, and I was home the same day.”
Dr. Ben-Zev said, “There are three approaches for hip replacements: anterior, lateral, and posterior. Each approach has its advantages, and every patient requires an individualized treatment plan. When appropriate, I prefer to utilize the anterior approach for hip replacement procedures because patients heal quickly. I utilize x-ray technology during the anterior procedure and do not need to cut any muscles, unlike the commonly used posterior approach. Patients experience a significantly improved recovery process during their first three months post-surgery with the anterior approach.”
“Prior to surgery, my quality of life was negatively impacted by my hip pain,” said Vickie. “I could no longer maintain an active lifestyle because it was painful for me to walk let alone exercise. The discomfort in my hip disrupted my sleep, and I regularly took pain medications. The pain consumed my life. Now, post-surgery, I live pain-free. I sleep well and am physically active. Dr. Ben-Zev has given me my life back!”
“An anterior approach primary hip replacement procedure can be performed as an outpatient procedure,” said Dr. Ben-Zev. “The patient arrives at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital in the morning, undergoes the surgery, and ideally returns home the same day to sleep in their own bed. A same-day joint replacement procedure requires more front-end preparations, referred to as prehabilitation (pre-hab), instead of back-end rehab. Pre-hab items include the patient seeing their primary care physician, their dentist, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, and a joints coordinator. The joints coordinator, located in the Prairie Ridge Clinic, teaches a class about what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. The patient learns how to prepare their home for their post-surgery homecoming and how to safely move around. While the hospital is a wonderful place to be, getting patients home is always the priority. Post-operation therapy is scheduled to begin on day three. Follow-up appointments with me are scheduled for two weeks, six weeks, six months, and every year or two indefinitely. I am committed to helping patients maintain long-term quality of life. It takes a large team to make this outpatient procedure possible, and the pre-hab is essential. I do my part as the orthopedic surgeon, but I give credit to the dedicated, interdisciplinary team at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital that ensures every patient receives a successful, comprehensive care plan.”
Vickie said, “Dr. Ben-Zev is a well-rounded surgeon. From discussing my hip pain over a year ago, to my recent one-year post-op appointment, Dr. Ben-Zev has been kind, understanding, and relatable. He completed a thorough assessment and then took the time to discuss my options for how to deal with my hip pain, including the different types of hip replacement procedures available. He detailed what I could expect from the surgery and the recovery process. He paid close attention to everything, from how I was feeling to how I was bearing weight. I felt very well cared for and informed throughout the entire process. Every team member that interacted with my case was highly skilled in their area of responsibility. Whenever I had a question, I found it easy to reach the right team member for a speedy answer. Follow-up and therapy appointments were convenient, helpful, and thorough. This hip replacement experience was remarkably easier compared to my previous experience. I am so grateful for this excellent team for tending to every detail of my care plan and successfully giving me a new hip to enjoy. I highly recommend Dr. Ben-Zev.”
Dr. Ben-Zev said, “I thoroughly discuss all options with each patient before surgery, and we make a joint decision on how to proceed. Patients can bear weight and walk the same day as their procedure, and most people only take two to four weeks off before returning to work. It is important to note that early signs of hip arthritis can be felt in the groin. If a person has difficulty putting on their socks, that can be an indication of poor hip rotation, and it would be reasonable to schedule an orthopedic appointment. I utilize x-ray along with a thorough assessment to determine if the problem is stemming from the hip or back. My office is conveniently located on the same floor of the Prairie Ridge Clinic as a spine surgeon. It is common for one of us to consult with a patient and then refer to each other as we determine the root cause of the patient’s pain. We are committed to getting each patient to the appropriate doctor. We also offer orthopedic walk-in appointments. Regarding joint pain, patients can avoid an emergency room visit and come directly to orthopedics. I welcome anyone who is interested to reach out to us to ask questions and to learn what options are available for your specific situation. It is possible to live without joint pain, and my entire team is dedicated to making that happen.”
