Boys & Girls Club Wisconsin Youth of the Year Recipient Announced

The Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha (BGCK) is proud to announce that Talib Y., a dedicated member for over four years and a senior at Harborside Academy, has been named the Boys & Girls Club Wisconsin Youth of the Year. This prestigious honor recognizes Talib’s resilience, determination, and leadership in overcoming significant life challenges—including financial hardships and his mother’s courageous battle with cancer.

Despite these obstacles, Talib has remained committed to his personal growth, leadership, and service to others. With the guidance of BGCK mentors, he has gained confidence, secured his first job, and become a role model for his peers.

“Talib has shown time and time again that challenges do not define him—his character does,” said Nicole Washpun, Director of Teen Services. “He approaches every opportunity with humility and determination, always looking for ways to give back and uplift others. His leadership has left a lasting impact on our Club, and I have no doubt he will continue to inspire those around him.”

BGCK CEO Tara Panasewicz shared her admiration for Talib’s journey, stating, “Talib exemplifies what it means to be a Boys & Girls Club success story. He is living proof that when young people are given support, encouragement, and a safe space to grow, they can achieve incredible things. We are so proud of his accomplishments and can’t wait to see what he does next.”

As Boys & Girls Club Wisconsin Youth of the Year, Talib will serve as an ambassador for Boys & Girls Clubs in Wisconsin by sharing his personal journey and advocating for youth programs that empower young people to reach their full potential. He will now advance to the Boys & Girls Club regional Youth of the Year competition, where he will represent Wisconsin among other outstanding youth leaders.

Reflecting on his experience, Talib shared, “Winning this award isn’t just about me—it’s about every young person who has struggled and found hope at Boys & Girls Clubs. This place has given me the tools to succeed, the mentors who believed in me, and the confidence to chase my dreams. I want to use my voice to show other kids that no matter where you come from, you can build a future you’re proud of.”
