Winter storm safety and preparedness tips

Kenosha County Public Health, in partnership with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management, has released safety and preparedness tips ahead of an approaching winter storm.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Kenosha County, effective from 12PM Wednesday, February 12th, through 3 AM Thursday, February 13th. This winter storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall, potentially impacting travel during the Wednesday afternoon and evening commute. Snow will begin Wednesday morning, with locally higher accumulations near Lake Michigan. Moderate to heavy snow is expected throughout the day, with snowfall rates reaching 1 inch per hour.

To prepare, ensure your home is stocked with at least three days’ worth of non-perishable food and water, and that all portable light sources have fresh batteries. For vehicles, assemble an emergency kit containing a flashlight, first aid supplies, booster cables, emergency flares, water and snacks, extra gloves, hats, scarves, blankets, a shovel, and traction materials like sand or kitty litter.

For updated weather information, visit the National Weather Service at https://weather.gov. Additional winter weather safety tips are available from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services at https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/climate/winter-weather.htm.
