History of Kenosha

Featured Story
History of Kenosha

Kenosha history dates back to the city’s incorporation in 1850. It has been a place of many names up until the time it was given the name Kenosha. It was originally called Pike Creek.

The place we now know as Kenosha was called Southport after it was called Pike Creek. The name Southport was supposed to reflect the town’s importance and significance as a shipping port in the southern most part of Wisconsin.

In the history of Kenosha, Wisconsin the year 1850 is important. That’s when the city incorporated and selected the name of Kenosha.

The city is not far from other larger cities. It’s about halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee.

In addition to its significance as a place for shipping, the Kenosha, WI background has also had an important place in Wisconsin as a city where there’s a lot of manufacturing and industrial work. Previously, American Motors, known prior to that as Nash Motor Company, was based here in Kenosha.

Today it’s still an importance place for businesses. Snap-On Inc., a maker of hand tools, is headquartered here, as it G. Leblanc Corp., the oldest and biggest maker of wind instruments in the U.S. is located here.

Perhaps the best known, however, is Ocean Spray Cranberries, which is known for its delicious cranberry products.
